Balance Rock Eatery and Pub

This article was first published on deseretnews.com on June 13th, 2012 and can be found here.

There is a lot of truth to the “Cheers” theme song: When it comes down to human nature, we are all looking for a place “where everyone knows your name.”

The Balanced Rock Eatery and Pub in Helper, Utah, can easily become a place you go to before you start an adventure or the place you go to gloat about the experiences and adventures you’ve already enjoyed. Continue reading

Tarahumara- Mexican among the Swiss in Midway

This article was first published on deseretnews.com on May 22, 2012 and can be viewed here.

So often we fall into the trap that Mexican food is what you get at any of the fast-food “Mexican” restaurants that dot the land. While this is what American Mexican has evolved into, it is a far cry from what might be considered truly authentic. It’s like comparing the fortune cookie to authentic Chinese food. But, as much as we might enjoy the American-Mexican we’ve come to expect, it is refreshing to find places like Tarahumara. Continue reading

Spin Cafe in Heber City

This article was also published in the Deseret News in Section A, page 13 on May 4th and at deseretnews.com and can be found here.

For people living in Salt Lake or Utah county, a getaway from the stressful work week may feel like it can never happen because many of your favorite attractions may be far away. For anyone in that predicament, Heber City can be the solution.

BLT's from Arshel's Cafe

Arshel’s Cafe

Arshel’s Cafe in Beaver, Utah is great. Simple as that. Like many of the restaurants we go to, this is just a couple of minutes from I-15. As we mentioned when writing about Maria’s Cocina, we didn’t know this place (or any place in Beaver, for that matter) existed; and as with Maria’s, it is worth the couple of extra minutes to actually go into the town and eat at an actual restaurant, rather than going to one of the fast food joints found right by the exits. Breakfast at the Parowan Cafe

Parowan Cafe

Having stayed the night in Parowan, it only seemed appropriate that we enjoy some breakfast there in the morning.  Though the city isn’t really large, there are a lot of people who travel through because of its location. From Parowan, you can take Highway 143 which cuts through the city, and takes you up to Brian Head ski resort and Cedar Breaks national monument; it is also a convenient place to stop for gas, as there is a large truck stop just off of I-15 at the exit for Parowan. For breakfast, we went to the Parowan Cafe (or Teresa’s Parowan Cafe according to their website). Continue reading

The carnitas, tacos, and a glass of the homemade horchata

Maria’s Cocina

For anyone that may have had the same idea that we had about  Beaver (that is that Beaver is just a small town that is only good for truck stops),you owe it to the town to drive through and see what Beaver is really all about, because in all reality Beaver is about as quaint as a small city can be. Beaver is a nice place to stop on your way south, but it’s also got more to it then that. Like many of the cities we go to and have gone to, we were directed to an awesome place to eat. Aussie burgers and Ironport. Incredible food.

Hi Mountain Drug

For the best burgers in the state of Utah, one might expect a nice burger joint located in Salt Lake, perhaps a place like Park City, or any of the other major cities throughout the state. Amazingly, to get the state’s best burgers (an award given by more than one group, including Utah’s “Best of State” for three years), you need to travel to the small town of Kamas. Continue reading

Mom’s Cafe

Before anything else, we encourage you to do the following: GO TO MOM’S.
Mom’s Cafe is located in the city of Salina, Utah near Richfield. Whether you come in off of I-70 or you come rolling into the city on US-89, you can tell that it’s been around for quite a while (it was permanently settled in 1871*) and it serves a bit as a permanent flashback to more laid-back days. We again reiterate the fact that if you are going through Salina, GO TO MOM’S!  Continue reading
